The Junior League of Greater Springfield
The Little Red Bookshelf program
The Junior League of Greater Springfield (JLGS) announces its collaboration with Reading Success by 4th Grade for the “Little Red Bookshelf Program”. “The Little Red Bookshelf” program re-circulates gently-used children’s books back into the greater Springfield
community where they are made available free for families to own.
“Earlier this year we revised JLGS' mission and vision to comport with the community's growing concern - literacy. With literacy in mind, we collaborated with Reading Success by 4th Grade on literacy outreach and have launched The Little Red Bookshelf program in six community locations! Members have collected and put bookplates into over 1,550 books. Knowing that these books are lining JLGS' red bookshelves waiting to be taken home and read to and by children in the community is awe inspiring. It lends credence to the William Shakespeare quote which reads “Though she be but small, she is fierce.” Indeed, with an active member base of under 20, we have developed, planned and executed a project over a short few months that will hopefully grow and assist the community for years to come" said president Sharon Baldwin.
We currently have six bookshelves placed throughout the community at the following locations:
1. Hampden Probate and Family Court, Springfield
2. Mason Square Neighborhood Health Center, Springfield
3. High Street Pediatric Practice, Springfield
4. VOC, High Street, Holyoke
5. Holyoke Housing Authority, Maple Street, Holyoke
6. Holyoke Childrens Museum
